Professor Usman A. Tar, Head, Centre for Defence Studies and Documentation,

Usman A Tar (PhD) is Professor of Political Science and Defence Studies, and Head of the Centre
for Defence Studies and Documentation, Nigerian Defence Academy. Formerly, Associate
Research Fellow at John and Elnora Ferguson Centre for Africa Studies, University of Bradford,
UK. Author of The Politics of Neoliberal Democracy in Africa (London/New York: I B Tauris, 2009)
and Editor of Globalization in Africa: Perspectives on Development, Security and the Environment (Lanham,
MD, Lexington Books), and Defence Transformation and the Consolidation of Democracy in Nigeria
(Kaduna: Academy Publishers, 2017). Prof Tar is Consultant to the United Nations Development
Programme (UNDP), Nigeria; Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (German Development Foundation); and
the Westminster Foundation for Democracy (WFD), Nigeria.
Usman Tar attended University of Maiduguri, Department of Political Science and Administration,
(1991-1997 & 1997-2000) where he obtained Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Political Science (with
First Class Honours) and Master of Science (M.Sc.) in International Relations with distinction. He
then proceeded to the University of Bradford, Department of Peace Studies, School of Social and
International Studies, United Kingdom (2001-2002 & 2002-2006) where he bagged Doctor of
Philosophy (PhD) in Peace and Conflict Studies, and Postgraduate Diploma in Research
Methodology (PGD) with Merit. He then proceeded to Leeds Metropolitan University, Bradford
College, United Kingdom (2008-2009) where he obtained Master of Education (M.Ed.). He also
attended the University of Brighton, Centre for Learning and Teaching, United Kingdom (2010-

2011) where he obtained Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE). Tar has supervised over
100 research projects at undergraduate and postgraduate degree levels in different universities.
